Potpourri
The taffy quality of a Zyrtec sleep. Just because you take a 24-hour Zyrtec twice a day, per your doctor, because peak pollen, doesn't mean you have 48 hours to your name. You have, at best, four to six hours, thirsty hours, during which you open bottle after bottle of seltzer for the sound.
Around dinnertime you start thinking about your morning coffee. The promise of the coffee itself – that you will drink it – and the promise that it signals – a new day.
(The coffee is making you thirsty.)
As a child you did not understand "potpourri" as a Jeopardy! category.
As an adult you do not understand the man who gets up holding his kid's dirty diaper when the M train pulls into Marcy Avenue, there's no way he's going to make it to the trash can and back onto the train, and what of his baby then?
Instead he drops the diaper into the space between the subway car and the platform. A woman looking out the window doesn't see him do this, she only sees the river and the bridge, she says to her companion, "Que bonito," over and over.
A Public Space No. 33 – with my story, JUNCO AND WOLF (!) – is coming out in late May 2026. If stars align, we'll have copies for sale at the SEARCH WORK event on May 14. Fingers crossed!
In my essay, "You'll know it when you find it," for SEARCH WORK: A Collective Inquiry into the Job Hunt, I write about my beloved work-study job at the Harriman Institute, and how that experience informed my search for my first real job after college graduation. (Spoiler alert: I ended up in Rackets, the best bureau at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.) Sneak preview in an earlier letter. And look for a fun reel on Instagram tomorrow!
